For over fifty years I have watched dietary fads come and go. Usually, they are simply a way of selling books with wild claims. Sometimes they revolve around a new “superfood” or ingredient with supposed magical ingredients, and sometimes they are simply permission to carry on with a specific bad habit. The Carnivore, Ketogenic, Paleo or Dukan diets are examples of the former.

The Macrobiotic Vegan Human Ecology Diet Over the past decade’s nutritional studies have shifted away from whole foods and toward the individual components of food. While that is an interesting study, it has really not informed the debate as to what a healthy diet looks like. What foods do we need in order to get the proper balance of nutrients? It turns out that the answer is not a mystery.

In January 1989 The Endangered Earthwas named planet of the year by Time magazine. The fact that the earth was important enough to bump the likes of Benazir Bhutto, Mike Dukakisand Margret Thatcher off the cover means this must have been an important issue. Senator Al Gore wrote the lead article entitled, What’s Wrong With Us? Good question Al. Anyone got an answer? Anyone?

It seems that everyone is stressed out. Even children talk about being stressed. I am sure that the incidence of stress in America and Western Europe is more pervasive than the Swine Flu (or whatever euphemism we are using for it to take attention from where it came from). I am surprised that governments have not issued Stress Alerts.

One of the most controversial and curious subjects in modern nutrition is the place of animal protein in a healthy diet. The evidence has been building over the past twenty years that our reliance of meat and dairy foods are a mistake. Most epidemiological studies indicate that excessive consumption of meat and dairy is a primary factor in most degenerative disease.

The desire to create a “standard” definition of macrobiotic practice has emerged within our community on a regular basis. In my experience alone I have been part of many intense and in-depth discussions at teacher’s gatherings and congresses in both Europe and America.

When your desire is great,  you cannot fail to achieve the ultimate in the end.  So, I have been reminding myself to be patient, no mean feat let me tell you. Persistence, perseverance and simply believing you will get there no matter how many setbacks you have along the way is paramount.

The biosphere is a delicate and dynamic system of energy, organic and inorganic matter. When we disrupt any part of it, the results ripple out and have far-reaching effects, often seemingly unrelated to their source. We search in vain to find some alien cause. Our attitudes regarding degenerative disease are a good example. When we focus on specific nutrients in our diet we fail to see the bigger, truer picture. We often fail to see how our food choices are driven by emotional and social influences and not physical need.
